It is 19 years since Princess Diana’s death – her life, the highest profile example of family violence which came with a smile. Because she did not fit the family norm, she became the outcast when she dared to speak up, financial resources withdrawn so that she could not handle the paparazzi. Upon her death, the people had to demand a royal funeral for the Mother of the heir to England’s throne! I see this scenario play off in everyday families too where they simply stand together to ostracise one member of the family. And they do it like Judas Iscariot who pointed Jesus out to be crucified – with a kiss or in modern days with a hug or a smile and if you are ‘lucky’ with an excuse. I listen to people going through Family Violence and help them from victim to victor so that it will not end in prison, suicide, illness, accident or murder. Family Violence is not a low socio-economic epidemic, no, it is best orchestrated by the educated: the so-called upper class, irrespective of race. I also find that families ostracise someone for no real reason but their inability to relate to a person who thinks outside their box. Instead of getting to understand the ‘abnormal’ family member, the family members join forces to shut him or her out of family gatherings, decisions and resources. Family Violence is not a disease of the poor, no, it is a disease of the rich. Ostracising someone is Family Violence – period.
