I began to receive child support only after I put a garage sale sign on the street walk, reading: Child Support Dodger Forces Mum to Cash In. [This was used in Court as evidence, by his female legal team, to show how bad I was!] Having lived on the benefit, the amount I received as social welfare was deducted from the child support amount and I got only what was left – I did not receive child support plus benefit as many people may think it works. Then the moment I moved in with a new man, my sole parent benefit was cut overnight [another example how Honesty backfired on me], so the new man who was not the father of the children and who was my partner for 20 days, had now been made liable and the father of the children and partner of 20 years was free to use his salary, accrued with my help, for himself. I did not receive a single cent over and above child support from the father of my children for anything such as schooling and after school activities, medical and dental care or insurances, and any transport or learning-to-drive costs. At the same time, I received, at least once a year, a letter from the IRD informing me that the child support has been considerably reduced as the paying parent’s income has been reassessed. [Over the child support period his income somehow halved from what it was when we were together!] And, for almost all of this period, child support was paid only for one of the two children, while the eldest was still under 19. Every letter I wrote to him to ask for more support, he ‘returned to sender,’ unopened, with my address written, in his handwriting, but without writing my name on the envelope. Did I opt to follow the formal child support complaints channels? No, I had had enough of legal proceedings consuming my life and delivering no results, constantly being told how ‘hostile and abusive’ I was [for challenging legal professionals]. If a parent does not want to care for their own blood; what can the single parent do?
