A culture shock! My husband falls within the norm of the day and I fall outside the norm of the day; therefore, the white winged steed (his logo) and the dark dainty horse (my logo). He is very well spoken, has a presence larger than life, and he is a man! which puts him in society’s primary basket. I speak with a heavy accent using unfamiliar expressions, wait my turn until I get the perfect moment to speak, and I am a woman! which puts me in society’s secondary basket. So it requires considerable more energy from me to not disappear in the shadow of his charisma which I manage to achieve by being contemplative. He helps me by breaking down social barriers with those to whom I am too different and I help him by explaining the world of those who are different so that we are able to balance people’s perspectives. We are equally strong leaders with very different styles though and what works for us is each having our own territories to rule over, so we work alongside each other but not together. We each have our own businesses and roles, complementing each other and helping each other, but we operate our domains parallel to each other. Nevertheless, we are soulmates, who understand and appreciate each other’s journeys without having to explain much. My natural tendency is making my marriage the foundation of my personal and professional life; however, I have actively decided not to do this ever again. Right or wrong in the eyes of others, but for me, this time, my marriage is part of who I am and not the sum-total of who I am. We build a synergetic relationship whereby 1+1=11, not 2.
