The late Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger - Father of the Afrikaner Nation, one of the First Presidents of South Africa, Face of the Krugerrand, Patron of the Kruger National Park, Leader of the Boer War – is my cousin, three times removed. My people originally came by boat from Sadenbeck im Priegnitz (Germany) to Cape Town (South Africa), where as a farming community, they ended up not agreeing with the British influence. They left, during the ‘Great Trek’ including land wars, traveling by ox-wagon and barefoot over the Dragon Mountains to the Transvaal (South Africa) where they discovered gold. The British came after the gold which eventually led to my people being kept in concentration camps in one of the cruellest wars in world history. President Paul Kruger (Oom Paul), were exiled to Switzerland where first his wife (née Du Plessis) and then he soon died and was buried, in Clarens, later to be re-buried in the Hero’s Acre, Pretoria (South Africa) where his Kruger House is still today. My ancestors ended up in Central Africa, the Belgium Congo, where my father was born from a German father and a French mother. My mother was born in Angola, from a German father and a Dutch mother. This is where they married and had 5 of my siblings, before they migrated, following the ‘Dorsland Trek’, to Namibia where the last 3 of us were born. During this time, the political ‘Apartheid’ era grew from within the Dutch Reformed Church, and Namibia – separated from South Africa by the Orange River - like a state of South Africa, was run under oppressive white supremacy leading to civil war. This was the case until the First President Sam Nujoma of Namibia and later the Late President Nelson Mandela of South Africa brought freedom to the indigenous people – Namibia is now flourishing, however, prosperity in South Africa is yet to come! History is in the eyes of the beholder – this is my take on where I come from.
