We have entered the Digital Age where it is possible that the largest transport provider has no vehicles, yet the decision makers of the day are from the Infrastructural Age; this is the reason for their focus on building this and buying that, such as the City Rail Link, to provide for a growing population. I have travelled through a number of countries lately and have seen that New Zealand’s infrastructure is probably one of the best in the world, if you can afford to actually make use of it. For Auckland to now follow other cities, in building a subway, is using a solution which worked in the Infrastructural Age to solve the problems of the Digital Age – this will cost our young citizens long after the current leaders have retired taking with them their personal short-term gains. It happens that my Kiwi husband runs a private hire vehicle business using the Uber platform and this is how we see the transport needs of Auckland being addressed: expanding to include private hire busses, private hire trucks, private hire boats and even private hire planes or helicopters. This way we make the best use of existing vehicles and infrastructure, also making rides / trips / loads / outings / experiences available to those who would otherwise not be able to afford it. Just look at all the boats sitting in the marinas, hardly used, which could be put to use through this digital public transport system. I know of sole traders in Northland desperately needing goods from Auckland but cannot afford the options offered through the current infrastructural public transport system. [And yet the National Government offered Northland bridges – more infrastructure which is not their real need.] A digital public transport system also creates many more jobs, including to those who have given up finding a job.
